The Warrior Diet by Ori Hofmekler was, as far as I know, the first diet to advocate Intermittent Fasting. At the time it was met with a lot of hate from the community, but since then, research into IF has produced some very interesting results.
The basic concept of the Warrior Diet, is living as our primitive ancestors did. Hunting / Fighting during the day and Feasting at night. He argues that this isn’t only what our ancestors did, but it is how our body is designed to work.
Our nervous system is broken into two sub systems. The sympathetic nervous system, which controls our bodies fight or flight response, to rule the day. And the parasympathetic nervous system, which controls digestion and sleep, to rule the night. This is scientific fact.
Ever wonder why you get tired and sluggish in the afternoon, after a big lunch? Its because you have engaged your parasympathetic nervous system. Which is now pulling blood from your muscled and brain and moving it to digestion, and sleep. Put simply, you interrupted your bodies natural cycle and now it wants sleep.
Keeping your body on the proposed cycle of fasting during the day, feasting at night allows the body to use both parts of the nervous system independently, as intended by evolution. This is about SURVIVAL.
What researchers have found since, have been nothing but health benefits. Especially for men.
In the fasted state major fat burning hormones skyrocket:
Testosterone increases up to 400%
Growth Hormone up to 2000%
Glucogon unhindered by insulin, burning fat like a garbage fire.
Insulin sensitivity goes up, lowering insulin resistance. Which means, your body has to produce less insulin to do the job when you eat, storing less fat, and preventing type 2 diabetes
Thats just the major stuff. I’ve been doing this for a month and have noticed:
I’m more focused during the day.
more assertive, aggressive.
no sugar cravings at all.
enjoying my meals more
solid, restful sleep.
body composition changing, my weight hasn’t changed much, but the fat to muscle ratio is visibly changing.
feeling awesome over all.
